Timothy Brown has been working in the driving research field since 1994 and has extensive experience in the design, development, conduct, and analysis of driving research studies. His academic and research career has focused on in-vehicle systems, warning systems, medical considerations in driving, and modeling driver performance. Recent work has focused on evaluating the interaction between drivers and vehicle systems to better understand safety implications.

He has served as an investigator or as principal investigator on a series of large-scale simulator projects and has overseen the recruitment of thousands of participants. He is the author of dozens of journal articles, conference papers, and technical reports, and a recipient of the Jerome H. Ely Award for the best article published in Volume 44 of Human Factors for 2002.

Dr. Brown is past member of the National Academies Transportation Research Board User Information Systems and Vehicle User Characteristics Committees, founding chair of the Joint Subcommittee on the Human Factors of In-Vehicle Systems, and 2015 chair of the human factors workshop planning committee. Additionally, he is currently a member of the National Academies of Science’s Transportation Research Board Committee on Impairment in Transportation, the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine, and the International Council on Alcohol, Drugs, and Traffic Safety. He is also a member of the University of Iowa’s Behavioral/Social Sciences Institutional Review Board.
