We are happy to announce that Steve Cable, our senior systems administrator, has been awarded the 2023 UI Outstanding Staff Award. This award recognizes current University of Iowa staff who have made outstanding accomplishments and contributions above and beyond their job responsibility that significantly benefit or bring honor or recognition to the university.

Cable was honored with this award because of his adept knowledge of advanced computing architecture and systems, his ability to write and integrate advanced software, and his dedication as a supervisor and team member. During his time at the Driving Safety Research Institute (DSRI), Cable has transformed our IT infrastructure from an elementary system to one of the most sophisticated systems in the area. Additionally, Cable is the driving force behind the technical aspects of our ADS for Rural America project. Cable wrote the custom co-pilot software for this project and collaborated with the project team to create a data portal that provides the first-of-its-kind data for public use. According to Omar Ahmad, DSRI deputy director and ADS for Rural America project manager: “With [Steve’s] leadership and innovation, we have established ourselves nationally as the leaders for researchers exploring the challenges of operating an automated vehicle on rural roadways.”

Dan McGehee, DSRI director, speaks for all of us when he says: “Steve Cable exemplifies the best the UI has to offer—a dedicated team player whose curiosity, deep knowledge, and expertise make us all shine at the state, national, and international level.” We are lucky to have Steve on our team here at the Driving Safety Research Institute and thank him for all of his hard work and dedication over the years.
